Welcome to the 2011 class!

This blog simply serves as a means by which students in my section (A02, TWF 0930) can ask anonymous questions related to the course material. I may also add the occasional interesting(?) link.
How do you ask a question? It's easy - just click on "comments" and leave a note. It should appear on the blog promptly, and I'll generally answer within 24 hours. As the course goes on, I'll invite questions on the different chapters we cover.

Textbooks are "supposed" to be in Thursday. Bookstore is open until 7 Wednesday and Thursday only.

Thanks for the update. You'll need the textbook package by next Tuesday, but it is not critical for Friday's class.

Hello, I understand that last year's "Chemistry: The Central Science" textbook is acceptable for this course. Is "Chemistry: The Central Science", Tenth Edition okay as well? -Thank you.

Hello,
Do we need the 2011 Laboratory Manual for this course, or can we use the Fall 2009 edition?
Thank you.

Much of the material is the same; however, you would have to work out yourself which sections correspond to the new book, accept that there will be some material missing, etc. So it will be a LOT of extra work for you, and potentially very confusing. You will still need MasteringChemistry ($60 on its own) and you’ll have to do without the outline lecture notes, as there are no lecture book-only packages. I *strongly* suggest buying the ebook package if you want to save money, ~$110. Remember this covers 2 courses, Chem101 AND Chem102. $50 extra to get both lecture books and both ebooks is a bargain.

Re: lab manual - you need this year's edition. The lab manual changes every year.

Online on masteringchemistry, there is aleady a homework assignment that is due tomorrow, and i was just wondering whether we are going over the material in class tomorrow, or we need to learn it on our own and then do the assignment.

Due tomorrow!??! Hmm, must be a glitch of some sort, I'll check with the course coordinator. But rest assured none of the homework assignments are compulsory anyway - just the online quizzes, and you'll get plenty of warning about those from me.

What is the Course ID for masteringchemistry? For example, the Course ID for masteringphysics was PHYS112UVIC2011. I believe that I need the Course ID to access the assignments, but I could be mistaken.

Hannah - the instructions, including code, are on page 4 of your lecture book. We'll be going over it in class tomorrow.

Hello,
I was just browsing through my course outline for Math 100 and noticed that both Chem 101 and Math 100 have midterms on the same night - Friday, November 18 - and that these exams are back to back, the former being from 5-6 pm and the latter from 6-8 pm. This might pose a problem depending upon how early one is meant to show up for an exam. Is there any possibility that the date or time of the midterm could be changed to allow the Math 100 students also in Chem 101 to arrive for their exam in a timely fashion? If not, I'll just be sure to bring a bike for speedy cross-campus travel! Thank you for your time.

Amelia - you'll be allowed to arrive late for your math midterm, and still get the full time allotment. We do the same for students who have a physics lab that runs until 5:30 pm.

Hi, i was wondering if the homework assignment #1 online with the 39 questions is due on the 17th. Some students have told me it is due and others have said that its just an optional exercise. Thanks!

Scott McIndoe said...

It does have that due date, but it is just for practice. "Graded Quizzes" are the ones you will be assessed on, but I will give you tons of warning about these.
