Revision for labs

Some tutorials to help you brush up on the basics for your labs:

The FULL ebook - the one you access through MasteringChemistry - also covers all this background, mostly in Chapters 1-4.

The drop-in center on the Elliott landing is a good place to go for help with labs. Here is a link to the schedule; go when Elvis or Monica  are there.

On the Avogadro's number link there are some practice questions.
One of the questions is
"2.26g of compound PX3 contains 0.8g P. What is the molar mass of element X?"

I found this question confusing, but when I looked at the solution it was not bad. I feel like this is the type of question you have to practice a lot to really understand. Where can I find more questions like this to practice?
Thanks

Check out the earlier chapters of the FULL ebook that came with your textbook package. Chapter 3 will have examples of the sort you are after. Note that these will be more useful for the labs than lectures, though.

Hi, which chemistry 11 concepts are involved in the lab assignment this week?

Not sure; check your lab manual.

Hello,
Where can I find a good example of a lab flow chart and hazard table? I want to make sure I do it correctly for the next lab.
Thank you

I asked Monica:
"The flow chart is a personal creation. There is no wrong way to make a flow chart. The only bad flow chart is one that does not help clarify the procedures of the experiment. The flow chart is a rehashing of the procedure in a style that helps to better understand what will be done.
See page INTRO- 9 in the lab manual for a bit on each. There is an example of a Hazards Table on page A-10. The TA was supposed to have done a flow chart in the first session. If there needs to be further elaboration, the Drop-in centre can help."

Is there a lab midterm and final? thanks

For the Antacid Efficacy Lab we are supposed to do a Standard deviation. However, we don't know what to use for the average of experimental results. Do we use Molarity of NaOH? Grams of KHP used? or the volume of NaOH used?

Check with your TA, or ask at the lab dropin hours.

Are all the labs weighted equally or is it that the more marks they're out of the more they're worth?
Thanks

Hi, I was wondering, for the lab 2 calculation section of the report, do I need to include every single calculation that I did, or can I just write the equation that I used as there is a lot, and can it be hand written? Thanks!

Is there a "lab final exam" for this course? I have heard other students talking about a very stressful final lab where they had to do the entire lab on their own with no help from the instructor. Is there anything like that in this course?
Thanks

For lab-related questions, please ask your TA or the senior lab instructor, Monica Reimer.
